WHY OUR CLIENTS CHOOSE US

At United Disability Care we are a dedicated and passionate team of experienced individuals who care about the lives and outcomes of the people we support. We enjoy working with our clients to help them achieve a lifestyle that is unique to them, providing supportive pathways to greater opportunities and experiences.

We want our clients to experience the world around them, realise their dreams and live a life of independence, health and happiness. United Disability Care specialise in providing support and care to people living with a disability.

The history of United Disability Care

Starting from humble beginnings in Northern NSW our organisation was founded in 1990. Originally called Accommodation Network then later ACCnet21 our mission was to provide housing solutions, perfect for people living with disability and seeking independence. Since this time we have undergone a number of changes which has seen significant growth; from a small family run business, to a national non-for profit enterprise. In more recent times we changed our name to better reflect our current business model and in November 2018 United Disability Care Pty Ltd was born. Today we offer a wide range of supports and deliver a service that unites our extended families to live lives they could only dream of.

Following on from the national campaign don’t “Dis My Ability” – the company wanted to further empower individuals with mixed abilities (disabilities) to be able to carry out day to day activities, or any activity that inspired them regardless of their (dis)ability. Over the years we have supported our clients to:

  • get paid employment
  • attend community activities and groups that are inclusive
  • enrol in TAFE and university
  • go on holidays
  • take charge of their lives

From our first supported accommodation home in Byron Shire, NSW, where we assisted six clients who wanted to live independently but needed a little help to do so. We now also have houses in Moree, the Hunter Valley, Lismore, Ballina, Ocean Shores, Tweed Heads, Gold Coast, Brisbane and Adelaide.

We continue to grow and have two brand new high physical support disability accommodation homes in Northern Gold Coast that will be ready for residents in late 2019. Through this expansion it has been important for us to never forget our beginnings and we are proud to share that one or our first ever clients still lives in our very first home in the Byron Shire.

Our organisation has a strong reputation, spanning over two decades, of delivering personalised services to individuals living with disability. Our style of support has evolved due to our willingness to continually review, grow and adapt to meet the changing needs of individuals with disability, their families and the industry itself.

United Disability Care is and always will be a local disability service provider, delivering a wide range of support services.

We currently provide supports to over 500 people with a diverse range of disabilities. Including but not limited to intellectual, chromosomal abnormalities, acquired brain injury, spinal injury, physical disability, mental health conditions, chronic illness. We know that no two people are the same and we tailor our support to meet the needs of our clients.

With the support and dedication of our 580 staff we will continue to develop, change and grow but always with our clients and their personalised support needs at the forefront of all our decisions.

Kristyn O’Donnell was an extraordinary young teacher, who has travelled extensively and overachieved in many areas of her life, all while suffering a degenerative disease that affected her mobility and sight. Kristyn was an individual with enormous strength, resilience and a determination to tackle life head on. She had great courage to face challenges and immerse oneself in life’s experiences because “that way you can get the most out of it”.

Kristyn was an inspirational 31-year-old woman who gave so much in her short life. Kristyn lived in Queensland since 1991 and excelled academically as well as being a keen sports person in netball and basketball. She also cut the ribbon and did the opening speech at the Cornubia sports stadium, the mayor was that impressed by Kristyn he asked her to do several other engagements and make speeches on behalf of the Logan young people including the 2000 Olympic torch relay. Kristyn was also a Cub Scout and in her teens, a full scout where she achieved over 50 merit badges for assistance to the community.

At secondary school she represented the area in the National Youth Science forum in Canberra as well as being an influential prefect around community issues and fundraising at Sheldon College, Kristyn also represented Australia twice at the world debating and public speaking events in America and Canada. It is at this period she was diagnosed with Spino Cerebellar Ataxia Type 7, which is a degenerative genetic disorder that effects every muscle in her body and causes hearing loss and she was legally blind and in a wheelchair. Undeterred by her health issues Kristyn did a double degree course at the University of Queensland. And was also the first disabled university student to study abroad, which she did at Leeds University in England. Whilst at university Kristyn was a volunteer for radio lollipop for 5 years and coached junior basketball at Cornubia Park. After Kristyn graduated university she commenced teaching at Kimberly College where she was adored and respected by her students and peers. Unfortunately, in 2015 she could no further teach as her disability continued to degenerate.

Kristyn gave so much to the community in her limited time, Kristyn finished her autobiography and continues to be an inspiration for all.

Testimonials from our clients

My disability led to a loss of self-confidence but UDC have helped me interact with other people it has made a huge difference to my life. I socially isolate due to my severe hearing loss and my disabilities, and UDC have allowed me get out in public and start socially interacting again. I am now out in the community, not having that fear that because I can’t hear that I’m going to embarrass myself so my wonderful support staff make sure that doesn’t happen and I am very thankful for that.

UDC has helped me through the NDIS process, I no longer suffer depression, and along with my independence, I have regained my confidence. How the NDIS has improved my life My wife Kerry had an NDIS package for 9 months. During this time my wife had support workers most days of the weeks to assist her in her with personal care, household upkeep and community access. I was very lonely and bored which lead to depression and a lack of motivation as I also live with an intellectual impairment and suffer from anxiety.

Being with United Disability Care has changed my life. I was living on the streets and United Disability Care helped me to get a place to live and to learn the skills needed to have my house. I was very shy before and didn't know how to talk to people. Now my support workers take me out to do things in the community. Being on the radio gave me confidence, I started working out more and feeling useful. I even went to iFLY indoor skydiving and that was a great experience.

Being Luke’s full time Carer was exhausting but United Disability Care help him move into a purpose built group home. We both now live happy, connected lives. We had in-home support for 3 years, then Luke transitioned into a group home which has been a positive experience and everybody that works at the Nunyara house are devoted to his care and wellbeing. They have embraced him whole heartily and I couldn’t be happier.

Before I became a client of United Disability Care I hadn’t had care for a long while since when my parents were alive.Life is totally different now, I have carers come in six days a week and life is great. Now I go and do different things and activities each day and I am out every day. I would like to say that all of the carers are awesome and my coordinator, she is wonderful.

Thank you so much for taking care of Mum and Dad. If it wasn’t for Sarah I would have never found out about the NDIS for Mum and my day to day life would still be a massive struggle. This funding has taken the stress off my shoulders and has actually given my quality of life back and more time to be a Mummy and give him the much deserved attention and time he needs. Thank you, this means the world to me.

Hi Greg, Please allow me to take this opportunity to again say thanks for your guidance and support. I often take the time to acknowledge how grateful I am to have help in this journey from someone that not only knows the ropes but also someone who genuinely cares about the outcome for our daughter and family. Please pass on my thanks to Sylvia for her support as well. I know that as difficult as it is at times to jump through the required hoops, none of which come with simple instructions it would be much harder without the help from you all.
