The history of United Disability Care
Following on from the national campaign don’t “Dis My Ability” – the company wanted to further empower individuals with mixed abilities (disabilities) to be able to carry out day to day activities, or any activity that inspired them regardless of their (dis)ability. Over the years we have supported our clients to:
- get paid employment
- attend community activities and groups that are inclusive
- enrol in TAFE and university
- go on holidays
- take charge of their lives
From our first supported accommodation home in Byron Shire, NSW, where we assisted six clients who wanted to live independently but needed a little help to do so. We now also have houses in Moree, the Hunter Valley, Lismore, Ballina, Ocean Shores, Tweed Heads, Gold Coast, Brisbane and Adelaide.
We continue to grow and have two brand new high physical support disability accommodation homes in Northern Gold Coast that will be ready for residents in late 2019. Through this expansion it has been important for us to never forget our beginnings and we are proud to share that one or our first ever clients still lives in our very first home in the Byron Shire.
Our organisation has a strong reputation, spanning over two decades, of delivering personalised services to individuals living with disability. Our style of support has evolved due to our willingness to continually review, grow and adapt to meet the changing needs of individuals with disability, their families and the industry itself.
United Disability Care is and always will be a local disability service provider, delivering a wide range of support services.
We currently provide supports to over 500 people with a diverse range of disabilities. Including but not limited to intellectual, chromosomal abnormalities, acquired brain injury, spinal injury, physical disability, mental health conditions, chronic illness. We know that no two people are the same and we tailor our support to meet the needs of our clients.
With the support and dedication of our 580 staff we will continue to develop, change and grow but always with our clients and their personalised support needs at the forefront of all our decisions.
Kristyn O’Donnell was an extraordinary young teacher, who has travelled extensively and overachieved in many areas of her life, all while suffering a degenerative disease that affected her mobility and sight. Kristyn was an individual with enormous strength, resilience and a determination to tackle life head on. She had great courage to face challenges and immerse oneself in life’s experiences because “that way you can get the most out of it”.
Kristyn was an inspirational 31-year-old woman who gave so much in her short life. Kristyn lived in Queensland since 1991 and excelled academically as well as being a keen sports person in netball and basketball. She also cut the ribbon and did the opening speech at the Cornubia sports stadium, the mayor was that impressed by Kristyn he asked her to do several other engagements and make speeches on behalf of the Logan young people including the 2000 Olympic torch relay. Kristyn was also a Cub Scout and in her teens, a full scout where she achieved over 50 merit badges for assistance to the community.
At secondary school she represented the area in the National Youth Science forum in Canberra as well as being an influential prefect around community issues and fundraising at Sheldon College, Kristyn also represented Australia twice at the world debating and public speaking events in America and Canada. It is at this period she was diagnosed with Spino Cerebellar Ataxia Type 7, which is a degenerative genetic disorder that effects every muscle in her body and causes hearing loss and she was legally blind and in a wheelchair. Undeterred by her health issues Kristyn did a double degree course at the University of Queensland. And was also the first disabled university student to study abroad, which she did at Leeds University in England. Whilst at university Kristyn was a volunteer for radio lollipop for 5 years and coached junior basketball at Cornubia Park. After Kristyn graduated university she commenced teaching at Kimberly College where she was adored and respected by her students and peers. Unfortunately, in 2015 she could no further teach as her disability continued to degenerate.
Kristyn gave so much to the community in her limited time, Kristyn finished her autobiography and continues to be an inspiration for all.
